UPdating Simplweb sites
Dear Barrie,
I got a call from a Joomla guy who evidently searches the web for
Joomla sites who asked about updating to 2.5
I said you handle updates at Simplweb but thanked him.
Do you know when Simplweb will have an update to 2.5?
He indicated that 1.5 versions will be outdated as of April 1st as far
as security goes. Huh?
Thanks so much, I'm not worried as much as I'm curious.
Peace is an action,

Hi Gail,
It's good to hear from you. I trust that things are going well with your website design and sales? I've received a number of comments on your site since we redesigned it - all positive... so I hope that's translating into positive income for you.
As for the transition to 2.5, this is not an update but a migration. Think of it as a new version since 2.5 uses different core features and softwares. Joomla's official support of 1.5 does end in late April; however, our server setup is incredibly secure so there is no reason to be worried since we will be supporting the sites.
Since the change to 2.5 will require a migration process, we are examining Simplweb as an entire offering to determine how we can upgrade our services in conjunction with the move. Some of the things we are considering is the addition of more extensions and design services as well. Our plan for the migration is to begin the process mid-late summer. We're thinking to setup a copy of your website on the new server which will be migrated to 2.5. You'll have the opportunity to make sure nothing broke in the process, contact support at your leisure and watch our new tutorials that will teach you about all of the new features. Once you fell that your newly migrated site is ready, you would repoint your URL to the new location and phase in the newly finished site.
I'll have more definitive plans defined over the next few months. As for now, 2.5 still has a number of bugs. I've already upgraded three sites and I'm not happy with the stability of the product yet. So our feeling is to allow Joomla to work out the kinks before we expose our customers to them.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to what your ideal "Simplweb" hosting experience would be, please feel free to write to me directly: ***@simplweb.com and I'll begin reviewing your thoughts.
I hope that places your mind at ease and I look forward to working with you over the months to come.
All the best,
Dawn

Dear Dawn,
Thank you for this thorough and very informative email! I'm so glad that
you emailed me. I don't have worries about security, that was in fact, the
major reason I switched to Simplweb in the first place, because of your
security features.
Sales are ok, but I have to set aside some time to really work on the site.
Which topic gives me an opportunity to let you know about the difficult
editing issues:
I'm enjoying working on the website using Simplweb in general, but am
having many editing problems. I can't change font colors, use the bold or
italics, and changing the headings or size of font is *very* inconsistent.
Changing the formating is impossible on the WYSIWYG.
Should I get over it and do everything on Word and then copy and paste? Do
I have something set wrong? It'd be nice to use more than the Heading 1 and
Heading 2
I couldn't use the quote feature the other day when I added the Cesarean or
Natural? article.
Thanks for your correspondence!

Hi Gail,
Thanks for your feedback. I'll be installing JCK today on a test site and I'll begin making videos for it. Once the videos are done, I'll install it on Simplweb. This will give you dozens of more options including pulling from the Styles that are included in the Templates CSS, ie, I want header 1 that is "sleek" Voila it styles it with that class. Very cool. You can preview JCK here: http://www.joomlackeditor.com/jckdemo
You'll see right away how much flexibility it offers. This also ships with Joomla 2.5 so it will get you ready for the big upcoming change.
All the best,
Dawn

HI Dawn,
I couldn't guess the adminstrator username or password for your JCKdemo.
Can I still get on and explore it? What should I type there?

Hi Gail,
I didn't have to login, it opens right up to the editor and you can see all of the buttons and options and begin typing to play around with it. Here is the link again: http://www.joomlackeditor.com/jckdemo To edit from the front end, click the red link near the top that says front end editing tool.
All the best,
Dawn

This looks pretty comprehensive and I love the icons!
I tried a div and then couldn't get out of it...
do I have to type without formating and then select the text to div AFTER
writing, or is there a way to get back to
"normal" format again?
I tried typing a vote div and could only return within the div and not
escape from it! ;D
But then I'm a newbie!

Hi Gail,
That editor has every button under the sun. I will probably turn off certain ones to makes it less confusing since there are some buttons you don't really need in there. I'll be working on that over the next couple of weeks.
All the best,
Dawn
